Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy 101

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality which combines talk therapy with ketamine as an adjunct to help eligible patients experience profound breakthroughs and lasting improvement. It is especially effective for depression, anxiety, PTSD — particularly when other treatments haven’t been as effective. A licensed KAP provider handles the psychotherapy portion, while Embraced Therapy’s psychotherapeutic team and Journey Clinical’s medical team manage the medical aspects — including eligibility, treatment planning, prescription, and monitoring outcomes.

What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective medicine for treating mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Its rapid antidepressant effects are often felt within hours and can last for weeks. Ketamine acts on the neurotransmitter glutamate to promote neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections.
Administration methods include IV infusion, intramuscular injection, nasal spray, and sublingual lozenges. Embraced Therapy and Journey Clinical use the sublingual lozenge form.
How Does Ketamine Feel?
Effects last around 45 minutes and are generally pleasant. Patients may feel detached from their body and experience shifts in perception, emotional insight, and visuals that provide relief from habitual thoughts. You'll be lying down comfortably during the session. Afterward, your therapist will guide you through processing and discussing the experience. Although the sensations may be hard to describe, the insights are often clear.
